Raffir Stabilized Mammoth Molar
Stabilized Mammoth Molar 24x40x40mm
Stabilized mammoth molar is cut from real woolly mammoth teeth from the last ice age (roughly 10,000 to 40,000 years old). The fragile fossil is treated with a specialized stabilization process, which makes it strong enough for fine handles, jewelry, inlays and other small, precious objects.
Color
Every piece is unique. Natural colors range from cream white to dark brown, with the occasional rarer piece showing brighter tones. The pieces in our collection are colored during the stabilization process.
Working and finishing
The teeth are not petrified, but they contain natural minerals and are harder to work than non-fossil material. Mammoth molar is the hardest of the three mammoth fossils because of its enamel layers.
- Use diamond tools where possible. If you don’t have them, use tools for hard steel at low speed.
- When drilling, it is good practice to mount the piece on a sacrificial piece of G10 or wood. This prevents the material from breaking out when the drill bit exits the back side of the piece.
- Optional: after grinding, saturate the surface with thin cyanoacrylate (super glue), then fine sand and polish for a smoother, stronger result.
