Stabilized Mammoth Molar 24x40x40mm

The stabilized mammoth molar is crafted from genuine teeth of the woolly mammoth from the last Ice Age (approx. 10,000 to 40,000 years old). The delicate fossil is treated in a special stabilization process, making it stable enough for fine handles, jewelry, inlays, and other small, valuable objects.

Color
Each piece is unique. The natural colors range from creamy white to dark brown, and occasionally a rarer piece will show lighter shades. The pieces in our collection are dyed during the stabilization process.

Working and Finish
The teeth are not petrified, but contain natural minerals and are harder to work than non-fossil materials. The mammoth molar is the hardest of the three mammoth fossils due to its enamel layers.

  • Use diamond tools whenever possible. If these are not available, use hardened steel tools at a low speed.
  • When drilling, it is recommended to secure the piece on a sacrificial piece of G10 or wood. This prevents the material from breaking out when the drill bit exits on the back.
  • Optional: After sanding, saturate the surface with thin cyanoacrylate (super glue), then fine sand and polish for a smoother and more stable result.
